A Performance Base Layer Designer designs the first layer that touches, supports, and moves with the body in real life.
At Home to Hike, this role connects fabric, movement, comfort, hygiene, and active lifestyle. The goal is to create base layer products that feel invisible in daily life, yet ready for heat, sweat, travel, exercise, and outdoor conditions.
Products must breathe, stretch, dry, support, protect, reduce friction, and stay comfortable all day.
Scope of Works:
- Performance Fabric Selection
- Select fabrics based on body contact and performance: breathability, quick-dry, moisture management, antibacterial properties, stretch and recovery, lightweight comfort, soft skin feel, anti-chafing comfort, wash durability, and hot-humid comfort.
- Functional Base Layer Design Development
- Design underwear, sports bras, active innerwear, compression shorts, seamless bodywear, and base layers with purpose behind every line, panel, seam, and structure. Every decision must answer: “What does this improve for the body?”
- Includes body mapping, support zones, ventilation zones, seam placement, waistband structure, gusset construction, stretch direction, compression balance, anti-chafe areas, skin comfort, and usability.
- Product Testing & Validation
- Performance base layers must be tested, not guessed. Products should be checked through commuting, running, hiking, training, traveling, heat, heavy sweating, washing, drying, and long wear.
Core Responsibility:
To design base layers that balance comfort and performance, support and freedom, simplicity and innovation, function and aesthetics, skin feel and durability, everyday life and active movement.
Preferred Experience:
Experience in apparel design, product development, fashion design, sportswear, activewear, underwear, innerwear, seamless garment design, or performance base layer products is preferred. Passion for trail running, hiking, training, or outdoor lifestyle is a plus.
