BESEEN Campaign : Redefining Night Visibility
Night-time visibility is a persistent public-safety concern for pedestrians, cyclists, motorcyclists, and drivers, yet the adoption of traditional high-visibility gear remains limited due to its stigmatized and unfashionable aesthetic. This study investigates how integrating retro-reflective technology into urban apparel and environmental media can overcome these barriers, normalizing night-visibility and democratizing safety. Employing a mixed-methods approach, the study combines practice-based research through the iterative material prototyping of 3M reflective vinyls and hidden typography with user-centered design, focusing deeply on commuter behaviors, lifestyle aesthetics, and human visual biology. This is supported by a case study approach that analyzes contemporary techwear brands and reactive out-of-home advertising to identify successful strategies for merging utilitarian safety with lifestyle desirability. Driven by the biology of scotopic vision and the Purkinje shift, intense cyan was identified as the optimal hue for low-light visual detection. The study proposes a comprehensive design intervention titled BESEEN. It features the “Visibility Series” (customizable, geometric retro-reflective stickers, keychains, hangtags) and “Reactive Media” (dual-layer 3M posters that act as sleek daytime ads but illuminate into functional traffic warnings under headlights). Ultimately, this research demonstrates that shifting safety gear from a mandatory warning to an effortless aesthetic successfully normalizes lifesaving visibility in everyday urban life.
