Study and Design of Costume Jewelry for Drag Queens from Study and Design of Costume Jewelry for Study and Design of Costume Palm Leaf Fibers with the Unique Concept of Manora Identity
The thesis titled Study and Design of Costume Jewelry from Talipot Palm Fibers Inspired by the Unique Identity of Manorah has the following objectives: 1) to study and experiment with dyeing talipot palm fibers for use in jewelry design, 2) to explore and design jewelry based on the distinctive characteristics of Manorah, and 3) to design costume jewelry for drag queens using talipot palm fibers.
The research process involved studying and gathering information from books, documents, related research, as well as interviews with experts in the fields of Manorah design, jewelry, and the testing of palm leaf fiber properties, dyeing, and design. This was done to evaluate various designs for production purposes.
The study and experiments revealed that talipot palm fibers are strong, resistant to both fresh and saltwater, slow to decay, and naturally resistant to mold. Dylon dye was used, providing even, long-lasting color without adverse effects on users. An analysis of Manorah’s unique identity showed triangular, bird-like, or cone-shaped forms with pointed tips, often decorated with vibrant beads. In the context of drag queen accessories, the designs were found to be bold and distinctive. Steel was used as the structural material due to its strength, moldability, and low cost, while sequins and snapper fish scales served as decorative elements, complementing the texture of palm fibers. The costume jewelry designs for drag queens inspired by Manorah were evaluated by experts. Design No. 3 received an average satisfaction score of 4.76, indicating high approval and leading to the creation of drag costume jewelry made from talipot palm fibers, rooted in the unique identity of Manorah.
