Learning center of pottery to preserve and promote tourism at Songkhram river basin
The center is located in Ban Tha Phan Hong, Na Thom District, Nakhon Phanom Province , along the route to Sakon Nakhon. Positioned near a historic community known for ancient pottery kilns, the site is also adjacent to a temple that preserves local ceramic fragments. The project spans approximately 54 rai of land. The architectural concept draws inspiration from traditional “pratun kilns”, featuring circular and elliptical forms that shape the overall layout. Each building incorporates a central courtyard and skylights, echoing the kiln’s fire openings to create dynamic light experiences. Circulation paths follow the natural curvature of the buildings, promoting a seamless flow between indoor and outdoor spaces. Buildings are grouped by function, ensuring continuity and intuitive navigation. The design emphasizes curvilinear forms, both in plan and elevation. Free-form roofs express the architecture’s identity and fluidity. Responding to the site’s natural slope and ponds, the layout employs split levels, ramps, and steps to adapt to the terrain. The elevated ground floor protects against seasonal flooding, while pathways of varying levels reflect the site’s natural topography. Curved, raised roofs highlight main circulation routes and form welcoming entrances. Each structure’s courtyard enhances light, ventilation, and spatial experience. The building arrangement carefully choreographs the visitor’s journey, using architecture as a medium for storytelling.
